Outfit of the Day: A note on Torrid
In honor of today’s outfit, I’d like to talk a bit about Torrid. Everything I am wearing (jeans, cami, bolero, and belt) is from Torrid today. Now I do have some issues with them. A lot of their clothes are awful and overpriced (baggy ugly graphic tees, anyone?), a lot of their clothes are not the best quality, their models are getting smaller by the day, and basically it’s just hit or miss with their clothing, but when it’s a hit, it’s definitely a hit.
I have to thank Torrid for a lot. They were kind of a gateway to style for me. There was no Torrid in my hometown. In high school, I wore a lot of badly homemade skirts, jeans, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. If I wanted something “cute” it was either from Lane Bryant (too matronly and expensive for my teenage self), DEB (too… cheap and ugly), or Fashion Bug (not even going to touch that one). No one told me that I was allowed to be a fashionable fat girl.
I discovered Torrid online some time in 2008, and my style slowly started to evolve. It took me awhile to learn that I don’t have to wear clothes that are “flattering” (read: tents for tummies) and that I do have a shape worth showing off. I really wish that I had found them while still in high school. Shopping for dances would have been a lot more enjoyable.
I’ve always been drawn to vintage inspired/rockabilly clothing, but I didn’t know that it was an option for me. One of my first Torrid purchases was a white cardigan with cherries on it. I wore that cardigan so much it has since worn out, because it made me feel so good. That cardigan was my first indicator that I am allowed to decide my own style and not let the world decide what I wear based on my dress size.
A lot of thanks goes out to the Tumblr fatshion/fat positive community for introducing me to a ton of new clothing options, so while I am starting to obtain clothing from other stores, Torrid will always have a special place in my closet.
Okay, now that I’m done with my Torrid sap-fest, I have to tell you about my hair flower! It’s from REDHOTKITTEN on Etsy, and maaaan does she have a ton of cute hair accessories, as well as other accessories like sweater clips, jewelry, and cigarette cases.
Yes, this is a white and black polka dot daisy with Buddy Holly in the middle. It’s like SHE KNOWS ME.
